CBD has been increasingly growing in popularity in the past few years, but what is it and what does CBD actually do?
CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of nearly 100 cannabanoids that are found in the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD oil is made by extracting cannabidiol from its plant which is done in various ways, the most popular and effective method being through carbon dioxide extraction. Today it is taken in numerous forms such as supplementation or as an oil and then orally taken or topically to the skin.
Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which is another cannabanoid produced by the Cannabis sativa plant, CBD oil does not have the same psychoactive effects such as the euphoric feeling that is associated with THC. This is a significant point that played into its authorisation in the UK!
Instead of causing a high, CBD is believed to work with other components in the body that connect to mood enhancement.
There are also numerous studies that prove CBD as a natural therapy for insomnia, anxiety, pain and much more!
Now that we've given you the fundamentals of CBD, it's time to explore some more in 7 things you need to know before using CBD oil!
1. CBD oil is a natural supplement that contains minimal THC, which means it doesn't have psychoactive properties.
CBD and THC are the two most common cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, however, the key distinction is that CBD is non-intoxicating and doesn't produce the 'high' that THC, on the other hand, does create.
This because THC joins to the CB1 (cannabinoid receptor 1) in the brain which results in euphoric feelings. Conversely, CBD does not bind to CB1 receptors and if it does the bond is fragile. This is because CBD requires THC to bind to CB1 receptors.
Hemp plants are a particular variety of Cannabis sativa plant which have less than 0.3% THC, making the plant and its extracts non-psychoactive.
There are various CBD oils made from different varieties of Cannabis sativa, we make our CBD oils using hemp and all of our products contain less than o.2% THC!
2. The best way to take CBD oil is sublingually.
Rather than swallowing your CBD oil, let it absorb under the tongue for around 60 - 90 seconds before swallowing.
This is referred to as Sublingual Consumption and is the most common way of taking CBD oil because it allows the CBD to enter the blood stream directly.
Without having to go through the digestive system that would accompany immediate swallowing of CBD oil, the effects of CBD can be experienced much quicker and more of the CBD itself is preserved.
You can expect to experience the effects of CBD after 15-30 minutes and they can last up to 6 hours!
3. CBD Oil is legal in the United Kingdom.
We understand that any word or product relating to 'cannabis' can immediately dredge connotations of illegality.
So, let's clear that up! Remember how we explained that CBD does not have any psychoactive effects because of it's low THC content? This is represented in the UK's laws on CBD oil.
In 2018, the UK parliament made certain cannabinoids legal, including CBD. Other cannabinoids, such as THC, are still classified as prohibited drugs and so are not allowed to be legally consumed.
They also specified that all CBD oils must be made from Hemp because of its naturally high levels of CBD and very low levels of THC. Indeed, the level of THC in a CBD oil cannot surpass 0.2%.
This was a result of the UK government recognising the many benefits of CBD and unveiling some of its inaccurate preconceptions. Read more about CBD myths in our blog, CBD Oil - 3 Big Myths Busted.
4. CBD oil has been shown to help with anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain.
Although studies continue to be completed on the vast benefits of CBD, there are several science backed properties of CBD Oil that support everyday problems.
An example is the ability for CBD oil to alleviate anxiety and improve sleep quality!
Cannabidiol's abilities as a sleep aid are a common reason people take CBD oil. Studies have found that CBD increases quality of sleep because it induces your body into stages 3 and 4 of restorative non-REM sleep. The body repairs cells and tissue, improves immune function, and makes significant contributions to memory processing in these stages so it's very important!
Not only does it support restorative sleep but cannabidiol also decreases the time it takes to fall asleep! As those with chronic pain often experience sleeplessness and poor quality of sleep, CBD's ability to ease pain in turn also improves their sleep!
CBD oil has also been show to improve anxiety because of its effects on the body's endocannabinoid system which regulates emotional processing and our mood!
In fact, a study conducted at a psychiatric clinic in Colorado found that patients had a reduction in anxiety by 79% and an improvement in sleep by 67% within one month of taking CBD!
Topical CBD also soothes sore muscles! This is because of the effect CBD has on the endocannabinoid system which as well as playing a role in our mood, also regulates pain sensation. As our skin has cannabinoid receptors, when CBD is applied to the skin it binds to these receptors and so the endocannabinoid system is activated and in turn creates relief from pain and inflammation.
For example, our CBD Muscle Balm soothes tired and aching muscles!
Because it goes straight into your bloodstream and can reach cannabinoid receptors all throughout your body, oral CBD works the same as topical CBD but on a larger scale.
CBD's ability to affect all these problems at once makes it one of the most incredible natural treatments available today!
5. CBD oil can interact with other prescription medications.
Whenever you're considering taking a natural remedy, it's important to be aware of any potential side effects.
A lot of drugs are broken down by enzymes in the liver before they are processed by the metabolism. CBD may compete for or interfere with these enzymes, resulting in an excess or shortage of the drug in the body.
So, CBD can raise or decrease the levels of other medications within the body. This can have adverse effects on the individual depending on the type of drugs they have taken.
Therefore please conduct a doctor before taking CBD with other medications.
6. Start taking CBD in small doses and work up from there if needed.
Unless your doctor has advised otherwise, we recommend taking CBD Oil in small amounts once you start and gradually building the dosage in increments if you desire!
Some people don't feeling the effects of CBD at the start , but as their dosage increases, they can see an improvement in their anxiety, sleep etc.
20-40mg of CBD per day is a good place to start which is about 4-8 drops of our CBD Oil. Increase this by 5mg or 2 drops until you start feeling that it's treating your problem.
In contrast, others may need a stronger dose before noticing any changes at all, particularly if their problems are severe, but nevertheless it's always best to start with a small dosage and then build up.
7. Honestly, does CBD oil work?
Thousands of users of CBD have nothing but positive things to say about it.
However, like most things, if you look hard enough, there are several people it doesn't work for, but it would seem these are the minority.
This could, of course, be due to the poor quality of CBD in the product, not giving the CBD enough time to improve your symptoms or it might just not be for you!
A common reason for CBD not working the way people hope is taking CBD via vaping, swallowing CBD Oil immediately or not taking it at the right time.
That's why we recommend taking CBD Oil sublingually and right before bed if you're struggling with sleep (instead of 9am which is what one person did and was unhappy to report they felt sleepy a few hours later instead of at night)!
