Menopause Awareness
This month pays homage to menopause, and its many facets and timelines.
A natural part of life, which most commonly effects women between 45 and 55. At present, there are currently more than one third of the UK’s female population navigating this natural hormonal transition.
Menopause can play havoc with parts of the body that you never had to think about. Put simply it’s an enigma which shows up differently for everybody.
The International Menopause Society (IMS) established Menopause Awareness Month to give this stage its due attention and the theme this year is “Chronic Pain at Midlife - from recognition to evidence-based care.
Chronic pain affects a proportion of women during and after the menopause. Despite both research and care, it remains highly underestimated and can include symptoms such as body aches due to hormonal changes.
The IMS 2026 campaign brings together trusted information and practical guidance to support better recognition and care worldwide: keeping the menopause conversation going, globally.
What happens in Menopause?
Whilst some women go through menopause with few or no symptoms at all, others can feel overwhelmed by a wide range of symptoms, from mild and manageable to intense and debilitating.
Menopause has three stages: perimenopause, the transition towards menopause; menopause, when periods permanently stop; and post menopause, the stage that follows. For some women, this journey can last up to nine years or even longer.
During this time of significant change, hormone levels fluctuate and eventually decline, periods become irregular before stopping, and a variety of physical and emotional symptoms may occur. These can include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes, vaginal dryness and reduced bone density.
For some women, the changes may be subtle, while for others they can feel overwhelming. Symptoms such as anxiety, exhaustion, brain fog, low mood and changes in emotional wellbeing can have a profound impact on everyday life.
Feelings of desperation are not uncommon. The body and mind a woman have known for years can suddenly begin to feel unfamiliar, with changes sometimes appearing seemingly overnight. Menopause is not simply the end of periods; for many women, it can be a profound period of physical and emotional transformation.
What’s going on in the body?
As menopause approaches, the ovaries gradually produce less of the hormone's oestrogen and progesterone, and the release of eggs becomes less frequent before eventually stopping. As hormone levels fluctuate and decline, menstrual cycles can become irregular; periods may become heavier, lighter, longer, shorter, or occur less frequently - before eventually stopping altogether.
These hormonal changes can affect much more than the menstrual cycle. Oestrogen plays an important role in many areas of the body, including the bones, heart, brain, skin and reproductive system. As levels decline, women may experience a wide range of physical and emotional changes. For some, these changes are barely noticeable; for others, they can have a significant impact on everyday life.
Menopause marks the end of the reproductive years and the beginning of a new stage of life, one that can look and feel very different for every woman.
